Sometimes the home business industry can be really depressing.  More and more marketers are waking up to blogging, but they only write stuffy, professional sounding blogs that make them seem more like corporate drones than real people.

What’s the problem with this?

It’s not interesting at all.  Even if their information is good, a blog that is too stuffy, or doesn’t have any personality to it will eventually dry up or drive people away.

We read blogs to connect with people, and to get content from real people who are in the trenches every day.  Not just to take in info.

I love a blog where I get to know the person behind it, where I get a glimpse of their personality or an idea of who they really are.

Ok, so what does this have to do with Britain’s Got Talent?

Sometimes the most effective marketing comes from the strangest places.  It comes from thinking about your ideal prospects and what they might be interested in that DOESN’T have to do with marketing.

These days you can assume that a huge portion of the population would like to work for themselves from home.  So you have to simply imagine what type of people you want to work with and figure out where they are online.

Now, for me I wanted to work with people who were interested in personal development, who didn’t just want to earn an income from home… but who wanted to improve themselves and be a force for good in the world.

I realized that my ideal prospect would be interested in inspirational stories.  At the time Susan Boyle had just blown the world away with her amazing voice coming out of the blue on Britain’s Got Talent.  People were completely inspired by her.

So I did a simple marketing campaign that got my ads onto news stories about Susan Boyle.

That simple campaign alone brought my business six grand in the next month.

Pretty impressive, huh? ;)

Well, it’s simple really.  You need to take a little time to think like the people you want to work with.  Why are they online? What are they looking for.  Quite often they will be looking for solid information, but that doesn’t mean you have to be stuffy and professional about it.  They are also these days looking to connect with people who share the same values, the same interests, and the same sense of humour.

The best thing you can do for your business is relax, be yourself, and have a little fun.  Be creative.  Think about what your ideal person is looking at and talking about and join the conversation!

You never know, you could make $6,000 by talking about reality tv, lol.
