Internet Marketing 2012: A Brave New World
Internet Marketing 2012
How many goodly creatures are there here!
How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world
That has such people in’t!William Shakespeare- The Tempest
Internet Marketing has always been an ever-changing beast, but these days it seems to be changing faster than ever. Now, not even two months into 2012 the changes are coming so thick and fast it’s incredible to behold. I believe the internet marketing world is changing for the better, as people are becoming more concerned with doing the right thing for the world…not just for themselves.
More and more people are waking up to realize that the selfishness of the end of last century drove us to a very bad place…and that following your dreams now is more about standing up to what is wrong in the world, than simply having a fast car and a McManshion.
What does this mean for the internet marketing world?
It means that to be successful you need to tap into the psyche and the incredibly interesting things that are happening now.
It means that having a website where you show your “amazing lifestyle” and try to get people to want to be you...just simply doesn’t work anymore.
People don’t want to be wealthy just to be wealthy. They want to change their lives and achieve freedom so that they can help others and assist in the sweeping changes that are happening around the world.
So how do you market and appeal to these new more socially conscious people?
You need to figure out what message you want to represent.
Stop and think about what really matters to you, what way things were done in the past that you feel in unfair, unjust, or just not right.
For me I discovered that the one thing that REALLY bothered me about internet marketing was the endless info marketing that ended up making newbies, broke…confused…and running around in circles. Marketers being afraid to give people the real story, but just dripping out tiny bits of information.
This bothered me so much in fact that I broke into a big rant about it on my blog (you can see that post here) and it inspired me to write the Rebel Marketer’s Manual, which I give away for free. Because Newbies have a right to free information!!
Figure out what your message is…and then speak about it from the heart! Let the message flow from you naturally. You will find the words come easily if you’re speaking about something you truly believe in. And your message will attract like minded people to you…who are ready to not only make change in their lives but in the lives of others.
Internet Marketing 2012 Concepts:
1. Screw Google, Focus on Social Media and Creating Real Relationships
I still do SEO and some work to get my posts to rank on Google, but it is no longer my primary focus. Google will send you traffic that is looking for information, but it’s typically people who aren’t quite ready to make big changes in their lives…it’s more lurkers. People floating around the outside looking in waiting for the right time to jump in.
Social media will drive traffic faster, and will help you to have a more responsive and active audience. Internet marketing 2012 is all about conversations. No longer is the “guru on top of the mountain” what you are aiming for. You want to be on the same level as your prospects. Helping them to see that you share the same values and beliefs.
Work to expand your social networks daily, and then TALK about your concepts and message. Let people share their opinions. Don’t be afraid of naysayers….not everyone is going to share your values and beliefs. Naysayers are a great indicator that you are touching on topics that people actually care about!
Make sure you are adding people the right way (see my two minute tips on how to get friends on Facebook, and how to get followers on Twitter).
2. Have Real Opinions
Don’t be afraid to share your actual opinions. Are there Guru’s out there who are pissed off that I’m telling people to stop the endless information marketing cycle and stick to one strategy? Probably. Are there people who think I’m totally wrong? You bet. Does that stop me being honest in my opinions? NO WAY!
Staying on the fence about every issue will just make your website totally blah and boring. People might get good info, but they won’t come back!
You will alienate some, but most people will respect you for actually having an opinion. And the people that share your opinion will stick to you like glue!
3. Be Yourself
Don’t be afraid to be honest about who you are. Telling personal stories, using pictures and videos, etc will all make people realize you are a real person. In Internet marketing 2012 people want information from each other, not from corporations or people at the top. There is a serious mistrust in mass media, so people have turned to each other to learn what’s REALLY going on.
Be a real person, let the real you show through everything you do.
4. Sell tools, and Consistent Information
Instead of selling new info products every week, which only confuses people and STOPS them from being successful. Teach people how to be successful and you can make your money by selling them the tools that will help them on their way.
Can you sell information ethically? Yes! I can and do market info products that are consistent with what I am teaching and can help people in advanced strategies to help expand their business.
Do you need to buy information to be successful? No! I always recommend setting yourself up with the tools for success. If you do it right and join up with ethical marketers you should be able to get the tools you need cheaply, be able to make some upfront money, and use that money to buy the information that will help you expand your business.
You do need information in the long run, but you DON’T need to know every strategy to get some success under your belt!
The most important part of Internet Marketing 2012 is the Relationship. Don’t ever sacrifice your relationships for anything. Find out what you care about and shout it from the rooftops!
Let’s all change the world together!

Honesty – Such a noble concept. Hopefully some of the so-called “gurus” out there will come across your blog and realize that the days of selling partial information and mis-information are numbered. It would certainly make the Internet a better place.

I agree Fred! They are in for a rude awakening as they have to start delivering complete and honest REAL information! I think we’re headed to a good place, but some people won’t be too happy!

This article was very useful and got me motivated. That being said. I have a question for you… I’ve been looking into this company: Life Peak LLC. I found them on the internet at http://www.lifepeak.com.
Have you heard of them? I want to get started in network marketing asap and this company seemed like it has a lot to offer: unique products, pretty decent comp plan, etc. PLUS they’re still in prelaunch. I was wondering if you could give me some insight.
Thanks so much for taking the time.
Sincerely,
Laura
Hi Laura,
Thanks for your comment!
There are a few things to consider before you join any company, and the sad truth is that a LOT of companies never get much past prelaunch…but, that being said here’s a couple things to help your decision:
1. Did you find someone to be your upline that can give you some good help! Usually you are looking for someone you connect with and who has proven to be successful.
2. Are you really excited about it? Sometimes you think something sounds good, but your heart just isn’t in it. If you aren’t really excited about it, it’s hard to motivate others to be.
3. Can you handle a loss if the company didn’t pan out?
I only ask this if it’s a prelaunch company. I joined a prelaunch company once that ended up folding within a few months, even though I was completely in love with the product and mission of the company…now I look for companies that have some momentum already.
4. How are you going to market?
Network marketing companies are really into the whole “just tell two people” but honestly, that doesn’t work very well. If you want to make a decent income you need to have some idea of how you are going to market the opportunity. Ask the person who introduced you to the company as they will become your mentor.
There’s always a perfect fit out there, and honestly most of the good companies have good products and comp plans…it’s really about what’s in your heart and how you can realistically market it!
I really hope this helps in your decision…and great question! I might make a blog post out of this, I’m sure other people have a tough time making these decisions too.
Cheers,
Niamh
Hehe…your question caught me just as I was sitting down thinking: I have no idea what I feel like writing today!

Good luck!

Very informative and useful. I am a VA and expanding my knowledge into internet marketing. I am working so hard to cope with it. After reading your blog, I am now set to improve my social media and use it as a powerful tool for my marketing.
Unique and beautiful information. This is helpful especially in my job who need more knowledge regarding Internet marketing.
Love your focus on Social media and letting Google take care of itself. We’ll drive ourselves NUTS if we try to ‘game’ the G. Best to forge real relationships as you suggest here. Besides – people work with those they know and trust!
