What to Consider Before you Start a Home Business
Most people who decide to start a home business do so because they are fed up with either lack of money or lack of time. They dive into the first thing that comes along that sounds easy and lucrative. Usually it is because they have seen that other people have created success at the opportunity. They see people who are living the lives they desire and they want in.
The one thing most budding entrepreneurs don’t understand is that to create success in a home business you have to invest either time or money, or sometimes both! They are resistant to investing either time or money because they are already feeling lacking in these areas. They get inspired by success stories and want to jump to the success part with as little effort on their part as possible. 90% of home businesses fail in their first year because business owners don’t properly fund their business, they don’t put in the time, and they never change their mindset.
To Start a successful home business you need to be willing to invest either Time or Money, and have an entrepreneurial mindset.
Time
Think about how you spend your time. I’m talking about the time that you own and you decide what to do with, not the time you are selling to your boss. Do you spend hours flipping through stations on the tv, surfing through random websites online? What long term result do you get from the way you are currently investing your time? If you are selling time to your boss (and face it all jobs are basically just you trading time for money) you are wasting a valuable resource because you sell the time once and never get it back. When you invest your time in creating a business for yourself you don’t receive much return on your investment at the start, but you will see an incredible ongoing return for years to come.
Think about what motivates you when it comes to time. Unless you are willing to take yourself seriously and treat yourself as the boss you will not be able to create a successful home business. You will need to be consistent with your time at the start and you will need to be focused. This investment now means you wont have to sell your time in the future. It will bring you time freedom.
Money
This one is simple. All businesses require money at the start. If you are not prepared to invest money into your business then you should not get started at all. This can of course be on many levels. If you really have limited funds you will have to invest much more time and it will take you longer to get your business off the ground. Nothing can help a business take off more quickly than money invested in the right way. This is a basic truth of business and applies just as much to home business as to any other kind. People get fooled by home businesses because they require just a fraction of the start up capital of a traditional business. You can start a home business with just several hundred dollars to several thousand. A traditional business would generally need in the hundreds of thousands to start.
The low start up costs and overheads of home businesses allow so many more people to get into business. Because most people get started with their own money instead of money from investors they often under-capitalize. They fail to prioritize the business, don’t change their spending habits, and don’t look for other ways to capitalize the business. So often new business owners say they don’t want to put money into their business because they started due to lack of money.
A question to ask yourself is how do you spend your money? Most people are willing to spend thousands on a flat screen tv, or on a holiday, or hundreds on the newest iphone, but don’t want to spend $50 on an ad for their business. Clearly these are items that will depreciate and become obsolete overtime, whereas any money invested in a business will help bring financial freedom later on.
Mindset
Clearly business success or failure is just a matter of mindset. Most people when going into home business think they will try it. They still see themselves as an employee, trying to make money on the side. But the most important key to success in any business is commitment to that success. Decide right now, today, that you are an entrepreneur. When tough decisions come up ask yourself, what would an entrepreneur do? What would a leader do? If you are going to start a home business you must view it as a business. You are so fortunate to have the opportunity to get into a business that gives you the freedom to stay at home, and that has such a low threshold for entry compared to traditional businesses. Take advantage of that. Invest yourself in whatever way you can. Always, always keep the end in mind. See yourself with the time and the money, living the lifestyle. What choices will that person make?
Drop the feelings of lack, drop the employee mindset, leave the herd and become an entrepreneur.
